Black Myth: Wukong - Zhu Bajie Boss Fight Guide

In Black Myth: Wukong, allies can be turned into enemies through manipulation and curses. During the fight against the Second Sister in Chapter 4's Village of Lanxi, she inserts a cursed dart into Zhu Bajie's head, significantly boosting his power and making him a necessary opponent to progress.
Initially seeming weak, Zhu Bajie proves to be a powerful and resilient fighter due to the curse. However, without optimized equipment, Zhu Bajie can easily defeat the Destined One.

To ensure victory, prioritize these inventory adjustments:
The key to defeating Zhu Bajie is to attack continuously without interruption. Use the recently unlocked weapon and armor variants from a Keeper Shrine and keep the Wandering Wight summon as backup.

Zhu Bajie's Attack Strategies

With two fights and three phases, Zhu Bajie has a vast attack arsenal. It requires perfect dodge timing and an understanding of his moveset.

How To Counter

Three-Hit Combo

Once the Destined One enters the temple, Zhu Bajie executes a three-hit combo, sweeping their Rake in left, left, and right directions. The second variant changes the final hit with a jump smash.

Wait for Zhu Bajie to hit the combo and make a dodge in the opposite side of their weapon's direction. Or, you can dodge backwards and wait for the combo to end. For the second variant, dodge backwards if you see them leaping.

Two-Hit Smash

Zhu Bajie will charge up (as indicated by a short tornado below him) and smash their rake twice at the Destined One.

If caught within the tornado's range, you will be stunned and unable to move until Zhu Bajie attacks. If done correctly, you can dodge at right, and for the second hit, dodge left.

Acid Spit

Zhu Bajie will immediately spit out acid from their mouth with two variants: Three or five spits simultaneously.

Before they spit the acid, they will thrust forward. That is your queue to fall back and locate the openings through the spits.

Spinning Tornado

Once in a while, Zhu Bajie starts spinning with immense speed to become a tornado and circles around the arena randomly.

While the tornado's pattern may be random, you must stay in the middle of the arena and dodge in any direction if Zhu Bajie tries to approach you.

Leap Combo

While the Destined One attacks Zhu Bajie aggressively, they will suddenly leap in mid-air and smash their weapon with a delay. After the leap, they will try to hit the Destined One, followed by a dropkick.

Once Zhu Bajie leaps, make a sudden dodge right and backwards rhythmically. When they recover, stay patient for an incoming attack and dodge right. In the end, for the dropkick, you can dodge either left or right (not backwards).

After the first battle, Zhu Bajie retreats to a nearby tar pit where the second, more dangerous battle takes place, spanning two phases.

Attack Strategies for the Second Battle, First Phase

The attack patterns remain similar in the second fight, but with a few modifications.

How To Counter

Downward Smash

In the arena before the fight, Zhu Bajie can be seen flying around the arena. When the Destined One enters the arena, they will make a turn and smash themselves down for an agonizing attack.

Enter the arena and run around until Zhu Bajie comes down, and dodge right to provide yourself with an attack window.

Five-Hit Combo

The basis of the combo strings remains the same as the first battle, but Zhu Bajie also throws acid from their hands.

As their attacks try to reach you, you may dodge either left or right.

Fish Transformation

In the Tar field, Zhu Bajie randomly turns into a fish that rolls over the Destined One.

This is entirely random; dodge forward to exploit the invincibility frames.

Attack Strategies for the Second Battle, Second Phase

In the second phase, Zhu Bajie transforms into Wild Boar, and uses both the Wild Boar and fish transformations to attack. The Wild Boar transformation has a variety of attacks:

How To Counter

Tar Explosions and Rams

Zhu Bajie will loudly scream, causing the Tar on the floor to boil and explode, followed by multiple attempts to ram the Destined One.

When Zhu Bajie stands on their two legs, they will scream. Look for the spots from where the Tar blows and avoid them. Suddenly, just before Zhu Bajie approaches you, make a perfect dodge at right. After the rams, Zhu Bajie will fall to the ground, giving you a huge window for a full normal-hit combo.

Tar Transformation

Occasionally, Zhu Bajie will turn into a Tar version of the giant boar, summoning other Wild Boars for multiple ram charges.

Make a dodge right when the Tar Wild Boars almost hit you, and you will automatically simultaneously dodge all the other Wild Boars.

Back Kick

Zhu Bajie will turn their back on the Destined One to land a massive dual-leg kick on their face.

You can dodge either left or right; backwards also works, but it's risky.

Defeating Zhu Bajie - First Battle

The first fight with Zhu Bajie is less complex than the second. After entering the arena, wait for Zhu Bajie to attack with their three-hit combo. Dodge them and use the opportunity to attack with a regular combo, combined with a Focus Point attack.
Continue dodging and pressuring them to make them lose their composure and interrupt their combos. However, pay attention to their attacks to dodge powerful strikes. If you pressure them enough, Zhu Bajie will fall to the ground, and you can use the Immobilize spell to further restrict their movement.
Because Zhu Bajie has low vitality, the initial fight is short. Once defeated, Zhu Bajie will retreat to a nearby Tar pit.

Second Battle

The final battle begins here. After entering the boss arena, wait for Zhu Bajie to come down while you move around. If done correctly, you won't need to dodge their attacks, but if you are caught in the radius, dodge to the right.
Taking the offensive gives you an advantage against Zhu Bajie, and most of their combos will be broken before they can start. There are some unbreakable combos with high poise, making dodging crucial; patience is essential.
Don't get carried away, as Zhu Bajie can become a fish-like creature in the pit even while executing combos; there is no guarantee when. If you see them turn into that creature, roll forward, turn back to lock on again, and use the Immobilize spell for a combo.
When Zhu Bajie's health is at 50 percent, a cutscene will start indicating the initiation of the final phase.

If you are not cautious enough, you will die here multiple times. As soon as the second phase begins, Zhu Bajie will transform into a Wild Boar for the rest of the fight and blow up tar from below, followed by multiple rams.
Stay defensive, and after three ram attempts, Zhu Bajie will slip and fall in the tar. Use the Immobilize spell for a more significant attack window, and Wandering Wight's Summon can come in a clutch. The entirety of this phase relies on Tar and boar transformations, so you must look out for Zhu Bajie's incoming attacks.
If Zhu Bajie transforms into Tar creatures, play it safe and avoid attacking them even if they deliver damage. The combination of defensive and aggressive playstyle is the key to victory, and the fight will end before you know it.
After the battle concludes, you will be rewarded with:
